Foreign ICT workers on 457 work visa to Australia up by 50%!

As a huge spike in demand for ICT skills caused a chronic shortage of skilled IT staff particularly in Western Australia - fuelled by the states massive mining and resources expansion many Australian companies in the mining and resources sector were forced to bring people in on 457 visas.

Likewise, overseas workers applying for this work visa in Australia, Subclass 457 visa, must be sponsored by an eligible employer to fill a nominated position and meet all conditions on their visa.
As the mining oil and gas industries didn't invest much in ICT before, many have found themselves forced to hire highly skilled foreign ICT professionals on 457 work visa for Australia now that the ICT infrastructure in mining, oil and gas companies has become absolutely critical in their successful operation.
According to Peter Acheson, chief executive of Peoplebank IT recruitment specialists in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane that since July of last year, a rapid rise in companies seeking specialist IT skills from offshore was seen. Demand for people on 457 visas has risen dramatically, since about the middle of last year, in areas that have been notoriously competitive like SAP people, those with strong experience in managing major projects and more management-type skills.
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has recently released its Migration Program 2010-11 reports. The report showed that there is an increase in the number of 457 visas granted for skilled workers in the information and communications technology sector, with primary visas granted to 5430 visa applicants. Named as the top nominated occupation for the year, 2010-2011, is developer programmers.
The recent report also reveals that there were 7480 information media and telecommunications primary visa holders in Australia. Likewise, it also showed that there was an increase of 117.6 per cent rise in the number of visas granted to ICT business analysts in the year to August 31, compared with the same time the previous year. A 38.6 per cent jump in visas granted to software engineers during the same period was also noted.
Starting last October 1, 2007 Labour agreement arrangements for the on-hire industry in Australia came into effect. This has tightened the supply of 457 visas as the on-hire industry can bring in skilled workers only under a labor agreement, which requires it to be managed more closely than previously.
