Ford Releases 12th Annual Sustainability Report

By:

Ford recently released its 12th Annual Sustainability Report to the public to give them a comprehensive look at Fords recent developments and progresses in environmental and social issues, as well as safety. The Blueprint for Sustainability: Driving Change report provides updates on the companys progress in key areas of operations, product enhancements on vehicle safety, and societal concerns such as water usage and supply chain management.

Sue Cischke, Ford group VP of Sustainability, Environment, and Safety Engineering says, The Blueprint for Sustainability encompasses a wide range of efforts at Ford to provide sustainable transportation around the world. Ford is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its products and facilities, supporting positive societal changes and ensuring economic viability for long-term growth.

Over the past year, Ford reduced CO2 emissions from 2010 model year new vehicles by 10.5% in the US. And 8.1% in Europe compared to 2006 model year. The automaker also reduced CO2 emissions from global operations by 5.6% on a per-vehicle basis when compared to 2009, set a goal to reduce CO2 emissions from the facility 30% by 2015, delivered initial units of Fords first all-electric vehicle Transit Connect Electric, and Currently offers 12 vehicles with best-in-class fuel economy and four models with at least 40 MPGs.

Ford also focused on societal sustainability by training suppliers in systematic solutions to working condition challenges and assessed 130 supplier factories around the world for compliance with Ford and legal requirements and helping establish a common industry guidance and reporting format for greenhouse gas emissions to be used by global automakers. In addition, the car manufacturer listed water as one of their top sustainability concern, and noted that they aim to reduce 2011 global water use by 5%.

Last but not least, Ford focused on safety. The 2011 Ford Fiesta was the first vehicle in its class to achieve an IIHS Top Safety Pick and leads its segment in National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations New Car Assessment Program ratings. In total, 12 Ford vehicles were named IIHS Top Safety Picks. Ford also invested $1 million to expand the Driving Skills for Life teen driver education program from 9 to 15 states and continued its intelligent vehicle research that will allow cars to talk wirelessly with one another to help reduce accidents and congestion.

Fords current work on environmental, societal, and safety issues make them a company other international companies, especially auto manufacturers, should be attempting to follow. Their efforts at creating not only eco-friendly cars but also eco-friendly plants and other work places make the Ford Motor Company a leader in sustainability.
