Ford County By John Grisham

It is a short story collection from John Grisham, a renowned writer who has already sold numerous copies of legal thriller books. He is still at the peak of his writing life, and is a devout Baptist as well. He is also a dedicated baseball fan, and has practiced law in a small town of Mississippi for about a decade. He also has some experience of doing missionary work in Brazil. He is the only writer who can be read without any embarrassment in any social circle, including planes, because his stories mainly contain puzzles and are devoid of violence or sex.

Page Turners from John Grisham

The amount of novels being churned out by John Grisham are peanuts when compared to other writers, that too when his second novel The Firm was a huge hit. He doesnt get that much respect by other writers (which is only natural), because he writes mere page turners. This is the first collection of short stories from John Grisham, which is so different from the usual courtroom thrillers that hes been dishing out so successfully. The setting of the novel is Clanton, with a population of only 10,000, and there are only 51 lawyers in the place. Since it is a common small town, the stories are deliberately kept artless, so much so that even artless starts to seem full of art (only for this reason).

No Plot Twists and Still Charming

The stories are extremely charming and have one common specialty after the beginning, they march straight towards the end. There are no plot twists, surprises or show off from the author. There are rural enclaves in the town, farmlands and woods, but then there are shady developers as well. On the one side of Clanton there are white landowners mansions and on the other side there are modest African American homes.

Copy Editing Not Allowed

In the story called Blood Drive, when a man is injured in an accident, three young guy go to donate blood, only to find out they dont even know which hospital the injured was taken to (because they stopped for beer and several other undesirable things, many times). As a result, their misfortune just goes on increasing. The next story is Fetching Raymond, in which two brothers drive with their mother to fetch the body of their brother who is going to be executed at midnight. In prison, he has become a legend in his own mind (having written a couple of atrocious novels, and having learnt guitar, etc), but the death sentence is still going to be executed. In Ford County, there seems to be a deliberate refusal from John Grisham to copy edit or revise his stories, which only raise the stature of the stories.
