For The Sharpest Possible Vision, Start Using These Five Simple Tips Today

Most of us take good vision for granted and only start to think about our eyes when something goes wrong. Let me say right at the start - if you're aware of any deterioration in your vision, your first step has to be a visit to your optometrist. Most eye problems are easily sorted out in the early stages. But you're just asking for trouble if you let things get really bad before you go for advice. Now - having covered that essential point to get examined by an eye care professional, let's talk about the likeliest cause of vision not correcting to 20/20.

Cataract is the most common of all the conditions that hamper the vision. One very easy to remember statistic is that at least 75% of 75 year-old people have cataract.

Cataracts cause a variety of visual problems including blurring, glare, difficultly recognizing faces or reading road signs - the list goes on. As the vision deteriorates, cataracts can be responsible for simple falls and even serious road accidents.

The routine treatment offered for cataracts is surgery. Cataract surgery is continually improving and the procedure is usually safe and effective. But of course there are some people who either can't have or simply don't want surgery. What I plan to explore in this brief article is whether cataracts can be avoided or reversed. We'll look at diet, nutrients and an eye drop that can possibly prevent or improve cataracts. Although doctors are still largely doubtful, the evidence is beginning to stack up that surgery for cataracts isn't inevitable. Given the right building blocks, it seems the body can avoid most of the degenerative changes common in old age. And in the early stages of many conditions, including cataracts, lifestyle changes, nutritional supplementation and non-invasive treatments can often reduce symptoms.

Three important initial steps are:

1. Reducing your exposure to free radicals (by avoiding smoking, cutting out trans fats and hydrogenated vegetable oils, deep-fried, burnt or charred foods, mono sodium glutamate and excess salt. Incorporating a UV block into your spectacles also limits free radical damage in the eye).

2. Increasing your dietary intake of antioxidants by eating at least some of the following every day: cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, bok choi, turnips, garlic, Cos lettuce, watercress, spinach, tomatoes, melons, berries and citrus fruits.

3. cutting out junk food. ("Junk" food, to my mind, includes pretty much any processed food, but particularly anything high in sugar and white flour. These so-called foods have no nutritional value other than calories. Not only are they nutritionally worthless, but the body has to use up valuable reserves of trace minerals to process them through the system. Alcohol and caffeine are also best kept to a minimum.

In addition to these three basic steps, you can consider two forms of supplementation:

The first comes in tablet form and contains vitamins A, C and E, plus selenium and zinc. This "AREDS" formula (often recommended by eye doctors) is commonly augmented with Lutein. Although often promoted as a defense against macular degeneration, these ingredients are also associated with a reduced risk of cataract.

The other preparation which may help reduce cataract is an eyedrop containing 1% N-Acetylcarnosine. The research published on these drops recommends one drop to be put into the eye morning and evening for up to six months.

So there you have five strategies to combat cataracts - and there's nothing stopping you from beginning today!
