For A Terrific Budget Holiday In Whitby Try A Whitby Guest House

By:

The wonderful town of Whitby nestles in a natural harbour on the north eastern coast of England in the County of North Yorkshire. Over the last century, this very picturesque fishing port has gained a reputation as a popular tourist resort. In Victorian times visitors flocked here principally for the bracing air and the bathing waters of the North Sea. There are many sepia photographs of the West Cliff Beach taken in the late 1800s showing the Victorian ladies in their full bathing attire along the seashore and rows of beach huts on wheels on the shoreline from which they alighted to paddle in the sea.

The town of Whitby today is far removed from that era. In days gone by, only the privileged few were able to afford holidays whereas nowadays it has become increasingly apparent that most of the population can, at one time or another, afford a short break away if not a full weeks holiday.

Bearing this in mind, it can be seen that the guest house owners in Whitby are instrumental in offering the average holidaymaker accommodation at a reasonable price. Cheaper options available include camping and caravanning but for those wishing a complete break then serviced accommodation is the likely obvious selection.

There are a wide variety of guest houses situated in and around the town. A large proportion of the guest houses are to be found on the West Cliff at the top of the Khyber Pass. It is here that the so called Railway King' George Hudson built the semi-circular Royal Crescent. The Crescent and the streets leading from here are home to a large number of guest houses principally because the size of the houses are no longer practical for todays families but are particularly suitable for letting rooms.

Todays' guest houses differ from those in the days gone by. The majority will offer ensuite bedrooms instead of many rooms sharing a bathroom which was commonplace before the 1990s. Indeed, it has been said that many a landlady hid the bathroom plug in a bit to save on heated water! Happily this is not now the case with the ever increasing modern facilities on offer by proprietors in competition with their neighbours to offer high standards and quality of accommodation. For any establishment to register with the local tourist office, they must adhere to the regulations laid down by the Council. These will include fire safety, health and hygiene certification, standards of cleanliness and quality of furnishings. Although not one hundred per cent certain, is can be said that the visitor should have a degree of confidence that the accommodation chosen is of an expected standard.

Competition is paramount in ensuring that accommodation providers strive to improve their properties and standards. The old take it or leave it' adage is no longer acceptable as has happened in the past. Today's savvy customer is looking for the best deal available and will not tolerate below par providers. Whitby, happily, is renowned for its high standards of guest house accommodation and has been the subject of many a newspaper article praising the town and its accommodation sector.

As the beginning of a new year approaches, the guest house owners are already preparing for the next holiday season. The winter months, when the numbers of visitors are at their lowest, is the optimum time for redecoration and refurbishment. Upkeep is essential in the guest house trade as the number of visitors passing through the doors can make an impact on the dcor, furnishings and carpets.

The last thirty years has seen the town busy with tourism throughout the year, before then it would be almost unheard of for holidaymakers over the winter time. The extended season is due in part to the various events staged over the out of season months by way of the Gothic Weekends and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Events.

Whitby is fully able to compete with other tourist towns with regard to ever increasing numbers throughout the calendar year. Not only are the guest house owners playing their role in tourism, other businesses in the town for example restaurants, cafes and pubs are increasingly upgrading to offer visitors excellent service.
