For A Great Weekend Away Try Hawks Nest On The North Coast

By:

You've got the weekend off or you're visiting Sydney and want to get away from the big city for a couple of days. A few places have been suggested, but they all sound too touristy and busy for what you want right now. You are looking for some place quiet near the beach. You want all the big city amenities to keep you comfortable, but you don't want the crowds. Is there such a place? Hawks Nest may be just the "nesting place" you're looking for.

If you've asked around, some Sydney locals may have told you about Nelson Bay and Port Stephens. Both of these are popular weekend getaway spots for Sydneysiders. The problem is, they may be too popular for what you're looking for. When you say you want to get away, you mean it. You want something with a cosy villagey atmosphere. Hawks Nest is right next door to Port Stephens, but with a population of just over a thousand, it is a perfect place to go for a totally relaxing holiday.

How did Hawks Nest get its unusual name? In the early days of European settlement, the region was primarily valued for its stocks of fish and stands of red cedar. Access to the area was by sea and a large tree was used as a navigational marker. The tree was a favourite nesting place for sea hawks. Hence, when the area around the tree was settled, the name Hawks Nest was used to identify the settlement and the name stuck.

Today, there is still a thriving fishing industry around Hawks Nest, but sandmining is the city's biggest industry, followed by tourism. It is still a small town, though. If it is so small, won't it lack amenities and activities? Will there be anything to do or see? Not only are there great shops, restaurants and places to stay, there's even a championship golf course. As for accommodations, you'll find everything from caravan parks to luxurious villas in Hawks Nest.

Hawks Nest is just a trip across the "Singing Bridge"from another charming village with an equally intriguing name - Tea Gardens. Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens will provide you with everything you need for a great holiday, including ocean excursions, fishing charters, great beaches and wide open spaces.

The best way to find a Hawks Nest accommodation is to look online before you go. Many of the best ones are tucked away on remote beaches, along the banks of the Myall River or in the quiet areas outside of town. How does a weekend or a week living on a fully self-contained houseboat sound? What about a two storey townhouse with a balcony overlooking the sea? If you're a couple looking for a romantic retreat, a love nest in Hawks Nest is easy to find. If you're a family looking for a nest for your brood, that too is available. Whatever you want, you can find it online in and around Hawks Nest.
