Foods You Should Not Give Your Cat Or Dog

By:

So, there is a certain logic to wanting to give your pets the same food as you yourself eat, because you know that the quality of the meat is going to be higher (because it is designed for human consumption), and you know exactly what is in it, because you prepared it yourself.

However, what most people don't realize is that there are various foods that are just fine for us to eat, but can have a bad effect on cats and dogs.

So, to avoid killing your pets with kindness, here is a list of ten foods (five each) that you should NOT feed your cat and dog.

Dogs

1/ Alcohol - A little obvious perhaps, but it is surprising how many owners (especially male ones, typically) think that giving their dog a drink of beer is somehow a bonding exercise between man and beast.

It isn't. You can cause them to go into a coma with some breeds at worst, and even at best, you are going to get them drunk and give them a hell of a headache in the morning!

2/ Cat Food - Looks the same, but actually it isn't. Cat food tends to have much higher levels of protein than dogs need and is too high in fat.

3/ Grapes and Currants - These can cause problems for your dog's kidneys, because they contain a toxin (as yet unidentified) that doesn't agree with man's best friend.

4/ Raw Eggs - Quite why anyone would want to give their dog raw eggs is a little beyond me. But some bodybuilders swear by them in their smoothies every morning, and so there is a good chance that a few muscle-men's dogs have been fed them over the years. The problem with eggs is a substance called Avidin, which makes the body absorbs less vitamin B. We can cope with this ok, but in dogs, it can lead to problems with the hair on their coats, and skin problems.

5/ Sugary Treats - I am a spoil-sport I know. But the plain fact is that candy and sweets ends up causing dental cavities and gum problems in most dogs. They aren't brushing every day or flossing their teeth, so giving them food that will rot their teeth really isn't a good idea.

And here are five foods that you shouldn't feed your cat.

Cats

1/ Garlic and Onions - The problem with these is that they contain disulphides and sulfoxides, which may cause anemia and damage red blood cells in Mr. Tibbs and his feline friends.

2/ Dog Food - This isn't poison or anything, so don't panic! But cat food does tend to be much higher in protein and fat, because cats need diets that are higher in those elements than dogs. If you have fed Mr. Tibbs some dog food occasionally, he will be fine. But you do need to take care and buy him some fish or other high fat, high protein food rather than 'Fido Chunks'.

3/ Rhubarb Leaves - It does strike me that anyone feeding rhubarb leaves to anyone (let alone their cat!) is probably a cruel person. Rhubarb is fairly evil stuff at the best of times (school dinners...) But on a more serious note, it does contain oxalates, which are bad news for the urinary and digestive systems of cats, so don't do it!

4/ Mushrooms - May contain toxic compounds, so best avoided.

5/ Yeast Dough -This has the potential to massively expand, and so as well as causing your cats to have wind, it can also potentially rupture their stomach lining and intestines.

So, the good news is that chicken chunks are still on the menu for both cats and dogs. But do give careful thought to what you are feeding your pet, and make sure it is doing them good.
