Foods To Avoid With Gout & Why

By:

Foods to avoid with gout are foods high in protein, in the main. But the real gout 'culprits' in foods are 'purines'. This short article lists some important foods to avoid with gout based on their purine levels. It also explains why you should avoid these foods if you have gout.

Purines are chemical compounds that naturally exist in our body's cells and in our foods. We need them because they convert genes into protein and foods into energy. So although high levels of purines are associated with gout, they are essential in our body's processes.

When purines have completed their mission they break down into uric acid. This is normal and the kidneys then take over and manage uric acid in the bloodstream at healthy levels. Excess uric acid is flushed out via urine.

But sometimes the kidneys cannot work efficiently for various reasons with the result that there is excess uric acid in the bloodstream. This excess uric acid then builds up in the joints in the form of needle-sharp crystals that cause heat, redness, inflammation, swelling and great pain. This is gout.

The following are important high-purine foods to avoid with gout...

Anchovies, bouillon, brains, broth, consomme, dried legumes, fish, goose, gravy, heart, herring, kidneys, liver, mackerel, red meat, meat extracts, mincemeat, mussels, partridge, poultry (especially turkey), roe, sardines, scallops, shellfish, shrimps, sweetbreads, baker's yeast, brewer's yeast, yeast extracts. And you must avoid all alcohol.

Although the above list of foods to avoid with gout is an important part of your recovery plan, it isn't in itself a 'magic wand'. For example, if you cut out the foods listed above without replacing them with 'good' gout foods, i.e. 'fasting', you could make your gout even worse.

So your recovery depends on many factors such as general health, medical complications, medications being taken, weight issues, body pH levels, lifestyle, etc., as well as a carefully controlled diet.

And of course if you're suffering from gout right now, you want relief today if possible. The foods to avoid with gout can't work as quickly as that. So you need a plan to get quick relief, and, a plan to control your gout and prevent it ever returning. To find out how to achieve both these aims please go to the author bio box below...
