When you are pregnant, you need to keep an eye on what you eat. This goes beyond making sure you are getting the proper vitamins and nutrients in your diet to care for both you and the baby. There are also many foods to avoid when pregnant. Taking these into account when you are planning your pregnancy nutrition is very important.

If you are pregnant you should steer clear of any raw meat. In fact, most raw foods other than fruits and vegetables need to be avoided. This goes for beef as well as other meats that should always be well cooked. It is better to stay on the safe side and have meat cooked thoroughly, even if it is a little bit better done than you normally like it. This is because listeria lurks in undercooked meats, and this bacterium can cross the placenta and infect the baby.

Deli meats need to be heated up to steaming before you eat them to ensure that no listeria is present. Meat that is left out can be contaminated by listeria, so you need to make sure everything is heated properly.

Any raw seafood such as shellfish and sushi are foods to avoid when pregnant. If fact, you should be careful with any marine-based foods that you eat when pregnant. Even if they are cooked, some fish still pose a threat because they contain high levels of mercury. Examples of such fish are king mackerel, marlin and shark.

Raw eggs need to be avoided, such as in homemade ice creams and some dressings. You should forgo any undercooked eggs such as "sunny-side up" while you are pregnant, just in case. While salmonella is rare, it can be devastating to a fetus.

While fruits and vegetables are very good for you and your developing baby, you need to make sure they are washed thoroughly. Never assume raw produce has been cleaned. The residual pesticides on produce can cause problems, as well as other bacteria that could have been present in the soil and may still be riding on the outside of the produce.

Some foods that women don't really seem to think about when they are pregnant are soft cheeses and unpasteurized milk. Many imported cheeses are made with unpasteurized milk which means that they may contain listeria and therefore are foods to avoid when pregnant. Basically, any dairy product you eat while pregnant should be made with pasteurized milk.

Some foods to avoid when pregnant are actually beverages. As most women know, alcohol is something that needs to be avoided at all costs. Don't believe anyone who tells you that a little bit won't hurt the baby. As far as anyone can tell, even a little alcohol can have a negative effect on a developing baby, so this is a risk you should never take.

You should also keep your caffeine intake to a minimum. A little bit occasionally shouldn't have a negative effect, but lots of coffee should most definitely be cut from your diet. Some studies have linked caffeine to miscarriage and developmental defects. Generally it is recommended that pregnant women keep their caffeine intake under 300mg a day.

By following some guidelines on foods to avoid when pregnant, you can ensure that you are protecting you and your baby from these threats. Thankfully there are many things you can eat safely, so you will still have an easy time creating balanced pregnancy nutrition.
