If you think of Yorkshire food is not something that you immediately associate with the county. Apart of course from Yorkshire pudding that is. However, the reality is that Yorkshire does in fact have its own very rich food culture.

People in Yorkshire have always liked their deserts and sweets. As a result a large number of the more traditional Yorkshire recipes are for desserts.

Ginger features quite strongly as an ingredient used in Yorkshire recipes. The sticky sweet cake called Parkin is made with ginger, molasses and oatmeal and is very popular in the Leeds area. The Parkin cooked and eaten in East Yorkshire is drier and more biscuit like than the sticky cake made and eaten around Leeds, but both contain ginger. The people of Yorkshire also have some unique recipes for Gingerbread including one in which a layer of crystallised ginger is incorporated into the biscuit. The people of Yorkshire also love their Ginger Beer in fact a lot of people there still make their own.

Another famous sweet Yorkshire recipe is Yorkshire Curd Tart, which has been made in the county since the mid 1700s. Only in Yorkshire is rosewater used to make a curd tart.

The recipes used to make liquorice sweets in the UK originated in Yorkshire. in 1760, the Yorkshireman George Dunhill came up with the first sweet liquorice recipe. The sweet was called Pontefract named after the town it was invented in.

Rhubarb is another foodstuff for which Yorkshire is famous. Although the industry has been in decline for several decades a lot of rhubarb still grown within an area known as the Yorkshire Rhubarb Triangle. At one point 90% of the world's winter rhubarb was grown in Yorkshire.

Yorkshire, in particular York is where the majority of the UK's early chocolate production took place. Rowntree's, Thorntons, Terry's and dozens more chocolate manufacturers were set up in York.

Some world famous breweries and the beers that they produce originated in Yorkshire these include Tetley's, Black Sheep, Copper Dragon, Theakston, John Smith's and Timothy Taylor. Yorkshire's spring water is so pure and fresh, which is why so many good breweries were established in the county.
