Foods And Drinks Sweetened With Fructose Linked To High Blood Pressure

By:

Over the past several years there have been numerous studies and investigative reports showing how High Fructose Corn Syrup(HFCS) helps to cause weight gain and and even type 2 diabetes. By themselves these health problems are very serious and can have severe negative implications on your over all health but a new study highlights an even more serious problem associated with HFCS: High Blood Pressure!

In a study performed at the University of Colorado Denver Health Science Center found that increased consumption of soda's containing HFCS corresponds to an increase in the likelihood of High Blood Pressure, also known as Hypertension. The research team headed by Dr. Diana Jalal, analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey collected from 2003 to 2006 which involved over 4500 adults with no previous history of hypertension.

The research subjects answered questions pertaining to their diet and focusing on "consumption of foods and beverages such as fruit juices, soft drinks, bakery products, and candy sweetened with fructose (primarily HFCS)". The data showed that when the subjects consumed the equivalent 2 1/2 soda's per day their instance of hypertension was 77% higher! This is an amazing statistic!! Even though the researchers could not control for all factors including other dietary ones, it still showed that HFCS is extremely dangerous when consumed on a regular basis.

Hypertension is a leading cause of strokes, heart attacks, hardening of the arteries, kidney disease and eye damage. Hypertension affects nearly 73 Million adults in the U.S., almost 1 in every 3. With the growing literature concerning the wide ranging negative health effects of High Fructose Corn Syrup hopefully the majority of the population will understand just how dangerous this additive is and what it is doing to our population. We need to put pressure on manufacturers to find health alternatives to this deadly product and we need to take control over our own and avoid products containing HFCS.
