Food Supplements: A Healthy Insurance Cover

By:

Though dietary supplements can be expected to enhance a diet where there are shortfalls, a handful of vitamins, minerals or other dietary supplements can not take the place of a healthy diet. Dietary supplements are products that are intended to supplement the diet and not to replace it and contain one or more ingredients like vitamins, herbs, amino acids or their constituents. The FDA's new manufacturing practices ruling ensures that supplements are produced in the quality prescribed, and do not contain contaminants or impurities as well as other chemicals or compounds other than what is mentioned in the label. Dietary supplements might be single extracts or complex compounds, offering not only vitamins and minerals, but fiber, nutrients, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, phytochemicals, and a whole host of nutritious substances that work together with other foods and provide the benefits of a healthy eating pattern.

Some people may require the need for supplements because the vitamins and/or minerals they need are hard to get in adequate amounts in the diet. The most common victims of vitamin and mineral deficiencies are pregnant women, nursing mothers, vegetarians, people with food allergies or intolerances, and the elderly. Sports performers and athletes might also lack nutrients, which need to be replenished. Bodybuilders who wish to avoid steroids, and the stigma attached to the unfair and illegal use of steroids will appreciate the benefits that legal bodybuilding supplements can provide. Widely bodybuilding supplements can be broken down into four major categories including proteins or amino acids, multivitamins, and creatine based supplements.

Food supplements come in a whole lot of size and shapes that might include pills, powders, formulas, amino acids, protein formulas, fat burners and drinks. These provide a subtle, incremental effect which when used properly, can provide an edge. Taking a daily multivitamin with mineral supplements has long been considered a nutritional cover over dietary shortfalls. But it is always better to fill in the gaps with food, which offers so much more nutrients. Experts agree there are some rules of thumb for choosing dietary and nutritional supplements like looking for trusted brands that have been around for some time. More than once there has been issues regarding these products some of which have been contaminated with heavy metals and other fillers that are not healthy, so choose a respected brand to be sure what is on the label is safe and exactly what is found in the product. Read the label and the claims carefully as products promising extraordinary returns are not going to deliver because nothing can yield those results.

Herbal diet supplements are available without a prescription and a huge variety of these can be found in health food and nutrition stores, online as well as in regular super markets. Herbal supplements are considered by the FDA to be food products as opposed to drugs. There are a variety of single extracts as well as combinations to choose from. Last but not least, be sure to check with your doctor before taking any of these dietary supplements.
