Food Storage-- Earthquake-proof Your Home Food Storage

By:

When you've taken the time to build up a home food storage room, you should be thoughtful enough to protect your food storage. Many individuals and families store food carefully, step by step over time, and then don't rotate it, or store it incorrectly in their garage where it can be invaded by rodents and subjected to the extremes in temperature. Some take no thought about their food storage investment and how it could be damaged in an earthquake.
There are some common mistakes that can be made when it comes to the food storage department of emergency preparedness. Don't let your food storage end up with the pigs because you didn't use it before the expiration date, and don't let your food be damaged in an earthquake or other natural disaster. To earthquake-proof your home food storage, store the food on the designated shelves (hopefully in a basement room, in a desirable temperature range of between 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don't want your bottles broken in an earthquake and a messy pile of then-inedible food full of glass on the ground, nail some strips of wood along the outer edge of the shelves so the food would catch if it was jarred or otherwise shaken. Of course if the earthquake was bad enough, the ceiling could cave in, but you still must do all you can to prevent your food storage supplies from being destroyed.
After you have gathered and maintained adequate home food storage supplies, it would be wise also to invest in some personal effects. Toiletry and hygienic items like toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, deodorant, shaving cream and razors, disposable diapers, feminine napkins, and the like would be pretty miserable to be without. And don't forget to include some comfort foods and spices. Variety is the spice of life, and even when in survival mode you will appreciate having something to lighten your load and add dimension to some food item staples that are blander and need a little "kicking up a notch." Having done all these things to establish an emergency plan and food storage/personal supplies, you'll have a sense of accomplishment and well being once you take these steps to become more self reliant and prepared for emergencies.
If you don't protect the stored items, your home food storage and your personal effects alike, you stand a chance of losing them. After having gone to all the trouble and expense of obtaining these life-giving items, you would feel sick to see them destroyed, especially when you faced an emergency and knew that you could have drawn upon these valuable resources had you given it a little more forethought.
Just like you have insurance on so many other things in life, health, car, home, life, etc., make sure your home food storage is stocked and ready for emergencies. Emergency preparedness in the form of food storage is one of the best peace of mind premiums that you can ever spend money on. And taking it a step further to protect that insurance by earthquake-proofing it is a must.
