Food Processing Conveyors Should Be Maintained And Cleaned Regularly

By:

Food processing conveyors are usually a web of belts, spread out throughout the manufacturing area on which the products are transported. The speed and accuracy with which the plant performs its job depends on this food highway.

Different products may require belts of varying designs and factories are not all the same size. Therefore conveyor systems often have to be designed and built for a specific purpose. If there is a problem in the design, it will often not become obvious before the processing plant is in operation.

As it is crucial that a food processing plant must be clean and hygienic, a design fault can be quite a blow to the company involved. Re-designing and installing will harm profits. If the problem is ignored or if the plant owner tries to find a way to work around it, hygiene may suffer.

Firms doing processing in the food industry who neglects hygiene even for a short while while they repair their lines, may be courting trouble. Germs are an ever-present danger and can collect in a very small space somewhere in a faulty system. It they find their way into the end product, the result may be very serious.

When the belt stops, the whole plant ceases to operate. The financial life blood of the company is not flowing anymore. They would want to restore the flow as soon as possible. Only human repairmen can do this. They unfortunately bring with them the possibility of contamination.Once repairs have been done, cleaning should always follow.

If production is stopped, there is the danger of products spoiling and spoiled fare must be removed resulting in financial losses. The slightest indication of trouble to the system must be taken seriously and addressed quickly.

Conveyor belts must be made according to specific guidelines. This is done to make sure the product being transported stays clear of trouble spots. It must not touch anything but a coated belt surface throughout its journey. This is to prevent any chance of the product being contaminated in any way. The belt must also be the correct length.

The conveyor system must be set up in such a way that the items will drop or slide off easily. If the product sticks to the belt a breeding ground for germs is created. As the material clinging to the belt gets older bacteria starts growing. The new food moves over it, absorbing germs and transferring it into the packaged product. To prevent sticking belts should be coated with a safe but effective material. The only way to ensure that only fresh material reaches the consumer is a thorough inspection and cleaning of the belt on a regular basis.

A very important aspect of the conveying system is the chains driving a belt. A number of different chains are in use. Some of them are self lubricating to ensure that the system can keep going for the maximum time.

Dirty or sticky belts will almost certainly cause trouble. A belt that is not clean will not allow the system to operate properly or the food to be distributed well. Ensuring clean, well maintained food processing conveyors will result in cleaner, safer food. To deliver the best food possible, the conveyors that move it must be in the best shape possible. Consumers should not buy a company's products if they suspect all may not be well with hygienic conditions at the plant.
