Food seems to be on the mind of the people of Trang who host several festivals connected with food ranging from savory to sweet from August through October highlighting their heritage and love of food. One such, the Trang Cake Festival is celebrated in the first weekend of August each year. Cake is found in Trang throughout the year in boxes stacked up in almost all the food stores in the town. The many bakers of Trang have their own recipes for the cake and as usual customers have their favourite type of cake which they say is above all else. The best places to buy Trang cakes are at the bakeries themselves. Some liken the Trang cakes to the traditional Thai kanom khai in texture and others say that it resembles a very light and buttery sponge cake. Bakers assure customers that no preservatives and baking soda are used in the cakes, just shortening and plenty of eggs. Many different flavours tempt customers ranging from the traditional orange, coffee, vanilla and butter to the more exotic coconut, pandan leaf or green tea available individually or in a combination of orange, coffee and vanilla. The cakes have no frosting, just the flavouring. Each bakery even has its own type of moulds to bake the cake in, some featuring a hole in the centre. The cakes from the village of Ban Lam Phu Ra appear to be popular as the people of the village are said to have many years of experience with baking cakes. However, personal preference will prevail in the end.
The festival, now in its 21st year will feature cakes in all sizes from the giant to other sizes and in many exotic flavours and will have no frosting. The festival will also feature parades, competitions, cultural shows and sales of souvenirs and other items.
