If you have a child that has been recently diagnosed with food allergies or you have recently found out that you suffer from some type of food intolerance you may be confused as to how to treat your food allergy and the best way to make sure that you stay safe while eating regular meals. While the obvious solution is to simply avoid the food substance that you are allergic too, this simple rule is not always that easy to follow, especially if you suffer from an allergy that affects multiple food items such as gluten intolerance or lactose intolerance.

One of the first things that you need to learn how to do is pay close attention to food labels and learn what potential ingredients could also set off various food allergies. For instance, if you are gluten intolerant you cannot simply look for wheat on the list of ingredients, because wheat is not the only thing that will cause discomfort even if it is the primary suspect in most cases. Even small food allergies such as nut allergies require reading labels because small particles can show up in other food groups which are usually clearly printed on the label for this very reason.

Many food products also have special labels printed on them for those who suffer from food allergies, such as labels that tell you that there are nuts inside or labels that may contain a G which can stand for gluten free. The trick is doing some research so that you know what you are looking for so that you can identify if a food item is safe if you suffer from lactose intolerance or any other type of food intolerance that could hurt you if you consume the food group.

Outside of purchasing food at the market to prepare at home you also need to learn how to be careful when eating out because food allergies can be trickier when you are dining out away from home. One thing you need to learn to do is to be brazen and outgoing about asking what goes into every dish that you are ordering as well as taking care to make sure that the food items are not prepared next to any other items that you have food allergies to as these can contaminate your dish.

Learning to live with food allergies does not have to be extremely hard if you take the proper steps to protect yourself. By heading online you can read a great deal more about different types of food intolerance so that you can get a better grasp on what food groups to avoid as well as potential cross food allergies that you may suffer from. Sometimes trial and error is the only way to truly discover what food allergies you have, but by being prepared from the start you can stay away from food items that may cause discomfort and reduce the amount of allergic reactions that you must content with.
