Role playing is not just about dragons, elves and other fantasy. What is an RPG? What is the defining element of a game, making it an RPG? Roleplaying is not just a PC game genre, it is also a hobby for many people in real life. Role Playing genre is unusually broad, and we'll give you a deep insight into the genre and its history.
Grab a torch and enter into the darkness with me. Let the magic light cast long shadows over the narrow walls. Let the sound of the gold guide you through the endless catacombs, to remove the treasures from a time past. Let the Elves sang lead you across vast plains, down to the unknown water and into the wisdom forest. Let me show you how it is to stand on the highest of mountains, looking over the deepest of valleys, and experience the darkest of nights. Explore the depths of the sea and cross the lighter sky.

No, role playing is not just about dragons, elves and other fantasy. But what exactly is an RPG? What is the defining element of a game, making it an RPG? There are questions like this I would take up in this article, as well as account for some prejudices, trends, debates, etc. surrounding the RPG genre.
Role playing is not just a PC game genre, even if that is what we should focus on in this article. There is also a hobby for many people in real life. It should be noted that the RPG genre is remarkably broad, and that it can accommodate a vast range of different game types. But to discuss, debate, desikrere and focus on the RPG genre, I will also write a little about a lot of role-playing game that has meant something to the genre throughout the years. Many role-playing games have been milestones in the genre's history, and the same can be said for a number of designers such as Richard Garriot (developer behind the Ultima series). This is also something I want to talk about in this article. So put on your helmet, take off your watch, and read on.
Own experience
I can well begin by telling a little about my own interest in RPGs. A while ago I developed even an RPG, a so called MMORPG or Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, a game where you participate in a universe with hundreds of other players simultaneously. The game was not a star, but it worked great and it actually got some one hundred faithful users. The game was called Era Online, and was built on the exact same concepts as other role-playing before that. The game looked like a glorified version of the old Zelda games, something many seem jellyfish up nostalgic feelings, which the majority of role players like very much. You could travel around in a relatively gigantic world, fight with a solid number of monsters, purchase and provide around three hundred different items, and talk with other players and take part in various social activities.
The game took me about two years to make, from the beginning to the latest beta version, and most did of their own. At the time I showed up at interviews for foreign websites, and newspapers and TV here in Norway. Today, the game spread to the four winds and as I shared the source code freely on the Internet, there are currently a variety of groups engaged in similar games based on Era Online. As you probably know, this was a very educational experience, and this formed the basis for my fanatical interest in the role play.
