Focus Groups - Protecting The Credibility Of Your Market Research

By:

Focus group supposedly is such an avenue where unprejudiced and concrete data is gathered for the benefit of the research; however, the opposite happens all because analysis is being compromised for whatever reason. A moderators job is to ensure that he will provide just the appropriate setting in a facility in order to extract the optimum result of the focus group. The success of the focus group is not entirely dependent on the single factor. All things must work together to make up a solid research output. Everything must be done into perfection, otherwise, it crumbles. Coming up with an enormous amount of relevant data but poorly analyzed will definitely have poor results.
Analysis of the gathered information marks the most significant phase of focus group, and it is the most difficult and time-consuming stage. This is where interpretation is being formulated after which all the succeeding campaigns will be patterned. Thus, failure to come up with a reliable analysis of the data is an utter failure of the entire project. This happens when the researchers screen out the resulting data, and come up with their own biased interpretation. When the researchers start to modify the data to come up with seemingly favourable presentations, things are headed to a disaster.
Therefore, to protect the credibility of the research, it is advised that an effort to record all the details in the discussion must be made. There is a deluge of information bursting forth in a focus group discussion, and it is virtually impossible to capture it all through note scribbling. The participants would sometimes speak out simultaneously that significant data might be missed out. Employing technologically advanced recording methods will certainly make a difference. Video and audio recording are now readily available specifically for these reasons. Video recording is a very effective way of recording data but sometimes the idea might work against your entire purpose rather than helpful. There are participants who become edgy when they consciously feel they are being videotaped and it might keep them from acting normal and voicing their honest opinion. Thus, that leaves out audio recording which is equally capable and effective.
The transcript produced by the recording serves a very significant contribution for the following reasons:
The transcript could very well let the researchers get back to the part of the discussion where they felt there is something to learn in there.
The transcript helps the researchers conduct the analysis in an expedient and credible way, thus producing concrete and reliable results.
The transcript could serve as a point of reference every time the credibility of the research is put in question.
The transcript provides a very concise recording of the data being divulged in the discussion.
The transcript could very well quote every participant verbatim, thus, it is ensured that every phrase that has been said is taken and understood in its context.
