Foam Packaging

By:

Originally discovered by accident in 1839 it wasnt until 1866 when foam packaging took on the abbreviation poly and then another 64 years until it was adopted by manufacturers as an alternative to the heavy zinc packaging that was being used. It is these developments that have lead to the worldwide usage of foam materials for packaging as well as many other purposes.

There are increasing amounts of foam packaging being made available by foam manufacturing companies to fulfil every possible need a buyer could possibly have. From foams with anti-static properties, conductive abilities and also increased insulation abilities there is now a foam perfect to safely and securely package any product.

One type available is polyethylene foam; also know as PE foam. This is foam that has several variations, each of which has specific qualities, therefore this foam is highly tailored to meet your specific needs, purposes and applications that the packaging is required for.

Polyethylene foam has high heat and sound insulation as well as excellent shock absorbency qualities. Which is why youll find it used in a variety of situations, from within the automotive industry to childrens toys. The ability for this type of foam to be produced in any colour makes it extremely useful in allowing the product to be tailored to appeal to the target market.

Additionally, due to its insulation properties, you will often find polyethylene foam being used as insulation for central heating pipes. It is also readily used to package delicate products such as electrical goods and breakable products due to its high shock absorbency. The market for polyethylene foams is increasing due to the versatility it can provide manufacturers.

Another type of foam is polyurethane foam often know as PU foam. This foam is most commonly available in flat or convoluted sheets and is of a more spongy texture than that of PE foam. This means it offers a more cushioning effect. Polyurethane foam is highly durable, easy to cut and non-absorbent. It is typically used during transit to protect products from damage and is widely used to package electrical products due to its anti-static properties.

An alternative to both PE and PU foam is Greencell. This product is biodegradable, making it more environmentally friendly. It can be used for a variety of packaging purposes and has natural anti-static properties.
