Flying When You Have A Wheelchair

If you are flying on an airplane for the first time in your life, it can be a bit daunting. This is especially true if you need assistance because you need assistance with your wheelchair. Thankfully today all the major airlines have made it much easier to get assistance for handicapped people.

If you want to have a stress-free trip it is important to plan ahead. Flight is the quickest way to travel. Don't avoid it because you are nervous.

Now you can book your flight online instead of having to call in first. Online rates tend to be the best option and now are available to customers who need special assistance. You simply select that you need assistance and that you have a wheelchair.

Before submitting it, it is always good to double check with the airline with a follow up phone call to make sure you are doing it correctly. You don't have to book the flight with them over the phone, however. You can most of the time be able to still get the better rate online. This is just a phone call to make sure that everything was done the right way.

You should also ask about boarding procedures for wheelchair flight before booking. Check what seating is available for the flight. You will have a much easier time flying at the front of the plane then if you have to go past everyone and go down the far aisle.

The best option is obviously flying first class. First class allows more space and is much more comfortable than coach. However, because of the expense it is often times unachievable. One option is to buy a coach ticket, check in early, and see if there are any unsold first class tickets. Sometimes you are able to upgrade to first class for a much smaller original fee.

Some airlines have better layouts with their seating than others. Choosing an airline with two seats instead of three per row will save you and your companion from having to deal with an additional person having to squeeze past you. There is also the option of buying an extra seat if you need to as well.
