What are fleas and ticks?
Fleas and ticks belong to the parasitic family which sucks blood continuously from the host. They are nothing but blood sucking parasites which get usually infested on dogs. Many of the dogs are allergic to insect bites. Most of the times these insects are unseen and hence dangerous. They stay on the host for most of the time biting them continuously. Usually they can be found in the moist areas in the vegetation part. What makes them more dangerous is, they can be carrier of lot many diseases for example Lyme disease, Rocky mountain spotted fear. And so pets infested by these insects need proper medication and care.

How to find that your pet has been infected by fleas or ticks?
Since both the insects are blood sucking parasites, so there is irritation and itching of skin. Itching of skin may cause swelling sometimes if your pet is sensitive to the bite. They excrete the blood which they suck, so there may be stains of brownish blood found on the fur or skin. Part the hair, fur and then look for such brown spots. These days specialized combs are available which are called as Flea combs. They can be used to get rid of these microscopic parasites.

In terms of Zoology, these are insects which belong to the order Siphonaptera. It is a Greek term derived from words siphon and aptera. Siphon means a tube or pipe. Aptera means wingless. So they belong to group which means insects which have tube like structure and are wingless in nature.
Some facts:
They jump from one host to another using their hard exoskeleton.
These insects have a complete development cycle: egg, larva, and pupa, adult.
The parasites which are on host are the adult fleas ones only.

Imidacloprid:
It is an insecticide which one of the major ingredient of the product. The peculiarity of insecticide is, it attacks on the nervous system of insects. Similarly, Imidacloprid blocks the nerve receptors of the fleas.


Permethrin:
Similar to Imidacloprid, Permethrin is also an insecticide and mode of action is also same. It attacks the nervous system of parasites and thus stopping the infestation of these harmful parasites. The only difference being that it is effective on both fleas and ticks also. Imidacloprid is known to be effective against fleas only. It is also sometimes well known as flea killer agent.
