Which common foods are beneficial for reducing flatulence and bloating?

The most important contributing factor to the production of excessive gas in the digestive system which leads to flatulence, belching, bloating and stomach pain, is diet. In order to decrease flatulence, we must be aware, at all times, which foods ought to be avoided and which foods should be eaten. Additionally, we should be familiar with how various cooking methods can influence the production of excess gas.

The following are a group of foods which do not produce flatulence and which can diminish the levels of flatulence.

Fruit

As far as flatulence is concerned fruit can be divided into 2 categories:- those which are high in soluble fiber and those which are high in non-soluble fiber. The preferred option will be those fruits which are high in soluble fiber because they are much easier to digest and therefore produce much less gas.

Fruits from the citrus family such as oranges and lemons are best avoided as they are high in non-soluble fiber and are therefore flatulent. It is also worth noting that fruits such as prunes, bananas and apricots can be highly flatulent unless you are used to eating them. Their high fiber content can lead to excess gas especially if they are not part of your normal diet. This does not mean that you should steer clear of them completely as they are a good source of many beneficial vitamins and minerals.

Many of you wil be aware of the significance of eating plenty of fruit. However, if you suddenly increase the amount of fruit you eat, bloating and flatulence are very likely to occur. Let your body adapt by increasing your fruit intake slowly.

The group of fruits which includes pineapples, papaya and kiwi is particularly interesting. This group has high concentrations of enzymes which help digestion. For example, pineapples contain bromelin which digests protein and can also help remove harmful parasites and micro-organisms from our bodies. The removal of these parasites and micro-organisms helps purify the digestive system. It has the supplementary benefit of getting rid of bacteria which cause putrefaction. This has the result of prevention and/or the reduction of pain and diarrhea.

Papayas are rich in something called papain. Papain performs similar functions to trypsin which occurs in pancreatic juices and pepsin which occurs in the gastric juices. They all assist in the processing of proteins.

There is a group of important enzymes known as proteolytics and it includes bromeline in pineapples, actidin from kiwis and ficin from figs. These enzymes are particularly beneficial because they aid the break down of proteins and promote good digestion which leads to the lessening or elimination of gastritis and excess flatulence.

Yogurt

One of the main causes of excess gas is putrefaction. Yogurt contains lots of helpful bacteria which can neutralize the the harmful bacteria which cause putrefaction. Include regular portions of yougurt in your diet to help reduce flatulence. If you are unable or unwilling to eat yogurt, you can take acidophilus in the form of a tablet. This will also lower flatulence and cut down on the smell.

Herbal teas.

Herbs in the form of teas can be very beneficial because they help reduce excess gas, sooth intestinal irritation and halt the production of excess flatulence. Gases produced by legumes can be neutralized by the drinking of teas rich in rosemary, sage, peppermint, fennel and coriander. Additionally, if these herbs are eaten with flatulent foods, they can considerably reduce flatulence and bloating while at the same time adding loads of flavor. It is generally considered good parctice to drink herbal teas after every meal.

In this piece, I have included only a small cross section of those foods which are of benefit to flatulence and bloating sufferers.
