Flash Floods Can Give You Little Warning Or No Warning At All

By:

When there is bad weather coming, you need to watch the weather station to see if there is going to be a flood coming your way. Sometimes a flood can come with no warnings and your homes can get damage done to it and there is nothing you can do to prevent it. In most cases these days, we have very good weather reports on television and over the radio that can many times give us warnings for specific areas. Often they can pinpoint right down to the neighborhood where a severe storm with heavy rains, possible tornadoes, and flash flooding could occur within the hour. This is a lot more time for advanced warning than people ever used to get.

You need to have flood insurance along with standard home insurance for the water damages and the other damages that can be caused. A good idea when you know there are risks for flash floods is to put down sand bags around your homes, high enough to prevent water from coming in. You need to put them far from your house so the water and the debris can not reach. You might only have time to do this is you know you live in a flood zone and do it well in advance of flood possibilities or if there is a hurricane predicted that could cause flooding in your area. Many people board up there homes for hurricanes because this can also cut down on the amount of wind damage.

Floods can allow water into the home at different levels depending on the amount of rainfall that is going on or from spring runoffs. People have seen their home ripped apart from floods and all their things gone in seconds when things get severe. If you have a house with multiple floors levels and there is enough time, put as many of your belongings as you can on the second floor so hopefully they will be protected from the water. Other smaller valuables like jewelry, important papers like insurance policies, heirlooms, and a few items of clothing and toiletries should be ready in case you must evacuate quickly.

If you must evacuate and there is time, make shut off the electricity, gas, and water. Of course, this is really only an option in events where there is plenty of advance warning such as with a hurricane or when you live in an area that is known to flood and you can stay semi prepared ahead of time. Other times flash floods might only give you less than an hour warning and sometimes not even that.
