The problem of dry flaky scalp is very common and is often confused with dandruff and various other conditions. Firstly, it should be correctly identified by checking out both the descriptions. Given below are various points that will correct the confusion:
1. Dry flakiness is when a person is having flakiness which is very dry. Often this is confined only to the top of the hairline, nape and head with dust like flakes. Usually, these are white in color. This is when a person is simply having a flaky scalp which is dry. The patches are mostly itchy. However, at times they are not at all itchy. At times, the condition can be very worse. This is true when the seasons are changing. One must also ask himself if the dry area is the same spot where the shampoo is usually applied. Many a times it is also the point that is hit by hot water from the shower.
2. The association of dandruff is often seen with an oily scalp rather than dry flakes. Dry flakes are usually 1 mm plus in diameter. They are opposite to the fine dust type flakes that are whitish in color. The dry flaky scalp can be itchy. However, if it is closely examined, it should not be inflamed or red. One should not see any dry patches around the ears, elbows, knees and chest.
Possible causes and cures for a dry flaky scalp:
1. The scalp can be greatly affected by dry weather. So a conditioner and a shampoo specifically for dry scalps should be tried. When the flakes disappear, a person should go back to the products that have designed specially for the hair types.
2. Hot showers are also a very common culprit. If a person is really liking a hot shower, there are adverse effects on the scalp. A person should try and work his conditioner on the scalp as it will act as a moisturizer.
3. The hair must be rinsed very thoroughly before conditioning and after shampooing. The outside of the hair making will be sealed down with the conditioner. It will become very easy and smooth to comb. However, if the remaining soap is removed from the shampoo, it will come over as flakes.
If a person is very sure that the
dry flaky scalp is not due to the dandruff, then the scalp should be massaged with moisturizer on the day when the hair is washed. If there is a lot of dryness in the scalp, non-volatile oil should be used.
