Fixing The Problem When The Hal.dll File Is Damaged In Windows Xp System

In the Windows NT and later systems, the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) file acts as the layer between the various software drivers that communicate with the hardware components. In addition, this file is needed when the system is to be booted. However, when this file gets corrupt the system does not boot. In such cases, you should try to rebuild its partition using restorative methods. If any of the methods is unable to fix the problem, then the best way to address the situation is by using a third-party partition recovery software to recover partition and start the system.

Let's take an instance where you are unable to start your Windows XP Service Pack 2 system. An error message is displayed in this situation, which is similar to the following message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.
Windows root\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Cause:

This erroneous situation can happen because of the following circumstances:
The Hal.dll file or the Ntoskrnl.exe files are not matched.
Some corruption of file system and/or disk has occurred in the primary boot record. Because of this, either or both of the Hal.dll and the Ntoskrnl.exe file have become corrupt.
The partition or the boot record has corrupted.

Resolution:

In such situations, there are the following resolutions that you can perform:
If the partition or boot record is damaged, then you should rebuild the master boot record by using the fixmbr tool from the Recovery Console.
If both the Hal.dll and Ntoskrnl.exe files are damaged, then you should run the chkdsk tool to scan and repair the file system using the Scandisk utility by using the following command in the Recovery Console command prompt.

chkdsk /r

Also, if the Hal.dll and the Ntoskrnl.exe files are not matched, then you should perform the following steps:

Start the system using the Windows XP CD-ROM.

Start Recovery Console.

Use the Bootcfg.exe tool to rebuild the Boot.ini file.

Restart the system after performing the aforementioned methods. The system should boot properly now. In case, the system does not boot then you should use a third-party partition recovery software to recover partition.
