What a better way to spend a winter evening than to spend it cozy around an outdoor fire place. However, winter can also mean light showers of rain and snowfall. Besides, the
Patio Heaters and these fire places are only used once in a year, thus making them very vulnerable to rust. Replacing them every year can be quiet an expensive affair hence, it is best to care for them before hand. Listed below are few steps to fixing a rusted fire place.
Getting Supplies
The first step to fixing the fire pit is to get the right kind of supplies. You will need to obtain a high temperature metal sealant and metal paint. Ensure that they can resist temperatures upto 2000 degrees. You can use manual cans spray cans; the latter is known to work more effectively.
Removing Rust
Use a rotary sander or a sanding block with a heavy grade sandpaper to sand the entire fire pit until you have fully removed the existing paint and exposed bare metal. Next get the rust remover chemical and spray or apply it on the affected area. You can even use a wooden or steel scrub to remove the rust completely before applying this chemical.
Smoothening
Use fine grade sandpaper to sand the fire pit down a second time. Do this in smooth circular motions to prevent obvious scoring to the metal. Do this until the metal has a nice smooth feel to it and no noticeable pits or scratches.
Applying Paint and Sealant
Next is to apply a fresh coat of paint on it. If using a spray can of high temperature metal paint, hold it approximately 1 to 2 feet away from the pit and coat the metal with the paint. Just like in the case of
Metal Garden Chairs, avoid making a thick layer of paint because this can lead to bubbles. Accompany this with a high quality sealant that will avoid further rusting.
Use these tips to make your
Fire Pit, as good as new this winter.
