First, if there is anything you want to dispute in the report, you can contact the credit bureau that provided you with the report and tell them what you're disputing. Demand that they investigate and correct the information. Send all correspondence by certified mail, return receipt requested. That way, you have proof that they received your letters. Keep copies of everything you sent.

The agency must investigate your dispute. If they cannot verify the item in question, they must delete the item from your report. They must send you an updated copy of your credit report.

Many people don't know this, but once the incorrect information has been deleted from your report, you can ask the credit bureau to send a corrected report to any company who has reviewed your report during the previous six months. If it was reviewed for employment purposes, they can send your updated report to all those requests made within the last two years.

If your attempts to have an item removed are unsuccessful, you have the right to add a 100-word explanation to your credit report. All who request the report will see your version of the dispute. For example, if you had a valid argument with your credit card issuer over a charge, you can explain your side of the story.
