Five Tips For Hiring A Good Employee

By:

Many feel at a loss about how to know if an employee will be a good investment or not. After all, most only get to read one sheet of paper with a few references and work history along with an in-person half hour interview. Of course, during this interview, it's virtually impossible to tell as much about a potential employee as one might feel like they need to know. That's why it's a good idea to follow the tips mentioned throughout this article to know how to hire a good employee.

First, it's a very good idea to invest in background checks. Employee screening practices to find out about whether or not an employee has had problems with the law in the past will help to give insight into the employee. It can shed light on whether or not an employee has struggled with theft or other offenses in the past. Any employer who is serious about making a good hiring decision should definitely invest in background checks.

A credit check is becoming a more popular method for screening employees as well. The credit of an individual can help to show how responsible they are. Their financial situation can shed light into their ability to handle finances and other important decisions that any job may demand. Be sure to get a credit check in order to adequately screen an employee.

References are put on a resume for a reason. Employees who do not give references on their resume should especially be asked for their references. References should always be called. If someone cannot give adequate work references, there is a problem there. It's much better to get insight into a potential employee if a previous employer is spoken to.

One thirty minute session with a potential employee is not enough time to gain adequate insight into their personality traits and their work competencies. It is best to spend a minimum of two interviews on serious applicants. People act differently from day to day. Spending as much time as possible with potential employees will help to shed some light into what they are really like from day to day.

The last tip for hiring a good employee is to listen to what is not being said. Body language can speak volumes about a person. If they do not give eye contact, if they are nervously shifting, if they are dodging questions then it means they are hiding something. Picking up on these signs can help to educate an employer as to whether or not the employee they are thinking about hiring is going to be a good investment.
