Five Things You Should Ask Your Roofing Contractors

By:

Before you choose roofing contractors, it helps to have an idea of what you should ask them. Not all roofing contractors work the same way, and some do provide higher quality services than others. The only way you can sort out the good from the bad is to ask them several questions before you ever hire them to do your work.

Here are the five questions you should ask roofing contractors before you hire them:

  • What are your payment terms? A major warning sign about any roofing contractors is requiring full payment up front. There are numerous horror stories of homeowners paying everything up front and then ending up with a job thats not finished. Proper payment terms will likely include a percentage to be paid up front, but never all of it.

  • Are you bonded? Roofing contractors who are not bonded are simply not qualified to do the job. Bonding essentially means that the quality of the work they do is insured. Roofing contractors typically pay insurance premiums to help guarantee their work, so finding a bonded roofer means you can rest assured that the job will be completed to your satisfaction. If its not, then the insurance will pay you back.

  • Do you employ sub-contractors for the work? One way some companies get around paying a lot to their workers is to employ sub-contractors. They may work for less, and their experience and the quality of their work may be less as well. If your roofer uses sub-contractors, ask about their license numbers and look into their work since they will be the ones actually working on your home.

  • Will you give me a list of past customers as references? Some companies are happy to provide the names and phone numbers of customers they have worked for in the past. This allows you to talk to someone who has actually hired them in the past and find out how they did.

  • Where does liability fall if you damage my property? Damages do happen sometimes, especially when heavy equipment is involved. Ask to see their certificates for liability insurance and also workers compensation so that you know they are covered in every aspect of liability.
