Learning self defense tactics is a practice every person, young and not so young, should take the time to do. It isnt that you live in such an ultra dangerous world; but the fact is that crime does happen. In fact, the statistics for rape alone are that one in every six women will experience the horrors of rape in her lifetime. Those are not great numbers. They are numbers that would tell any woman that she could benefit from knowing at least some self defense tactics.

When you engage in self defense, there are many ways you can go about it. There is combat self defense, which focuses on realistic fighting situations. There is martial arts training, which can sometimes be good for self defense; but tends to be geared more for sport. The intensity of the program you get into is fully up to you; which leaves the door wide open for every person to find a program that works for their lifestyle and personality. Clearly, someone who is a sweet little timid soul would not be attracted to combat self defense. That doesnt mean they dont NEED it or that it wouldnt do wonders for them; it just means they probably wouldnt start off learning those self defense tactics.

In self defense, there are many things that are helpful to know. Here, we will cover five helpful tips for things you should learn to increase your personal safety and go through life confidently knowing you can protect yourself and your family if ever you need to.

1.Learn how to strike. Some forms of fighting teach you how to grapple on the ground. But, if you can stop an attack quickly so that it doesnt go there, youre better off. In combat self defense, you learn to strike using all body parts. The more, the merrier, right? You can ward off an attack by striking with your hands, feet, elbows, palms, head and knees. Thats a lot of power!

2.Learn to Grapple. As stated, most fights will end up on the ground. While your strikes are meant to stop your attacker before it gets that far, you still need to know what to do if you are thrown to the ground. This is especially important for women because their attackers are bigger and stronger than they are; and oftentimes will tackle them from the side or from behind. The key in learning to grapple is the same as in striking; you want to end a struggle quickly. So when you learn to grapple, find a program that teaches you simple techniques that you can learn quickly and use in a pinch. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is built for street fighting and uses a ton of grappling techniques. This is great; but for defense you want to master a few at a time instead of taking on too many at once.

3.Get your balance. In a fight or attack, you need your mind to work as well as your body; they are equal partners is helping you escape harm. To handle violence properly, you must learn to handle the stress that comes from a violent attack. Adrenaline rushes through your body when you are frightened, and can cause you to forget all your training. So train your mind to handle stress and you stand a chance.

4.Consider weapons. Weapons are a part of any realistic fight on the street. Some people carry pepper spray when walking or jogging; or just carry it in a pocket or purse. Some people carry legal knives. However, ANYTHING you can find can be used as a weapon. Learn how to improvise through a combat self defense course.

5.Know the Law. Many say that the first fight you have is for your life, and the second is with the law. It is important to know how to properly deal with a violent attack on a moral and legal level.
