Five Mistakes To Avoid While Choosing Domain Names For A Personal Page

By:

Setting up one's personal webpage has definitely turned into the new "having an official business card" move for those who are already established movers and shakers and those on their way up alike. And while plenty of people manage to pull off this leap to the world of new technology without a hitch, others will find that they end up making the same mistakes that plenty of others have. These mistakes, while seemingly minimal, can add up to people not getting where they need to be--one's particular website. And by missing out on being in the proper spot online, there is a real concern that traffic will not go where it needs to, meaning that a website is little more than a placeholder until someone actually manages to arrive.

This can all be avoided by making smart choices as far as the world wide web and how one chooses domain names are concerned. After all, this is a key ingredient in success, one that is pertinent long before design and interface come into play. If someone doesn't know how to get to the right spot online, the design element doesn't particularly matter. Here are five mistakes that cause trouble when one is picking out a URL for a website, so that they can be avoided for anyone going through the trouble of setting up an online presence.

#1 - Not doing homework with similarly named pages. Picking out a URL to represent oneself or a personal project is something that is important, because it means a commitment of time for going under that name that will last for a long while. And if someone choosing an online identity that is too close to someone else's, then there's a real chance that the right traffic will always be confused. So it's important to see if there are other people or pseudonyms out there that look similar, and to then avoid ending up with something that's too close to them accordingly.

#2 - Going with underscores. No one ever remembers to use them.

#3 - Being too vague. If others have the same first name and last name, then firstnamelastname.com is not the best pick. But getting really vague to avoid being too similar to someone else's title means the trouble of people not even associating the site title with one's project--and that's not good, either.

#4 - Forgetting the purpose of brevity. The shorter a name is, the easier it is to remember. So domain names that go on and on are far more likely to be forgotten, falling by the wayside. Regardless of if someone can search for the right one on a search engine, the purpose of a URL is to get people where they need to be quickly. So choose a shorter one and see that happen better.

#5 - Avoiding the .com. There is no other option as far as domain names are concerned in terms of actually getting traffic where it needs to be. Do not choose a weird other ending, unless one is actually an .edu or a .org. It's just not a smart move in terms of netting visitors.
