Jazz music has a way of making people of bringing people together to kick up there heals, snap their fingers, and enjoy the day away. If youve never been to a jazz festival, I highly recommend making a day of it. There is a plethora of festivals to choose from throughout the world at any time of the year and while the type of jazz played at these gatherings may vary from region to region, the good feelings and times had are consistent from all festival goers. Lets take a look at just five of these annual festivals that are put on for the pleasure of seasoned and new jazz listeners alike.

New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (New Orleans, Louisiana)
Known as the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans, Louisiana has been hosting the annual The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (Jazz Fest for short) since 1970. This festival has envisioned the merging the jazz culture and heritage since its beginning and has held popular appeal from the get-go. Jazz Fest has a rich history in itself and has hosted a plethora of international renowned artists, including Aretha Franklin, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Ray Vaughan, Abbey Lincoln, Bob Dylan, Gladys Knight, James Brown, and many more. Jazz Fest has been honored with many awards throughout the years and is enjoyed by thousands every year.

The Montreux Jazz Festival (Montreux, Switzerland)
The Montreux Jazz Festival dates back a few years earlier than Jazz Fest, with its beginnings rooted in 1967 by Claude Nobs. This two week festival, which happens in Montreux, Switzerland during July, began as an exclusive Jazz festival. Over the years, however, the range of music played there has expanded and the festival has featured artists such as Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, David Bowie, Phil Collins, and Joe Cocker.

Festival International de Jazz de Montreal (Montreal, Canada)
Turning on the tunes for 30 years, Festival International de Jazz de Montreal is the largest jazz festival around the world. Attracting over 2 million festival goers a year, this massive festival was inaugurated with Ray Charles performing in 1980. Over the years, great musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, James Brown, Vic Vogel, Tony Bennett, and Paul Simon have graced the stages and given awesomely powerful performances.

Canarian International Jazz Festival (Canary Islands, Spain)
The Canarian International Jazz Festival began as a modest event in 1992, featuring local jazz artists living on the island of Gran Canaria. It did not stay this way for long. This festival has grown to international popularity and features jazz music from different eras and countries. Artists who have left their mark on the Canarian International Jazz Festival include Benny Green, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Carmen Lundy, Marcus Miller, Yellow Jackets and The Rippingtons, to name but a few.

NYC Winter JazzFest (New York, New York)
The youngest of the jazz festivals mentioned here, the NYC Winter JazzFest began in 2005 in Manhattans Greenwich Village. This two night event may be a bit smaller and more condensed than other festivals, but it still packs big performances that simultaneously happen until the wee hours of the morning for all jazz lovers to enjoy.
