Five Great Tom Hanks Movies To Watch On Satellite Tv

There are handsome actors, sex symbols and heartthrobs, and then there are those who aren't bad looking, but aren't the first to pop into people's minds. When it comes to Tom Hanks, he is definitely in the latter category. While the early years may have been kind, his looks were more of an "aw shucks" thing, perfect to match his demeanor. And yet, when one is flipping through channels on an HDTV late at night, whose face is going to pop up more? He's managed to do so much, whether it's play a child trapped in an adult's body in "Big" or a man with only a volleyball for a friend, that it's no shock he keeps getting cast in truly diverse roles. For satellite tv viewers who can't remember their favorite Hanks vehicle, here are five of the finest.

#1 - Catch Me If You Can. Sure, this is a diCaprio starring role, but what would a con man movie be without a strong cat to play opposite the mouse? Now a Broadway musical and based upon a true story, it is Hanks who really manages to hold things together and keep the subplot of his dealing with this real-life con artist from getting entirely too hokey altogether.

#2 - The Bonfire of the Vanities. An excellent Tom Wolfe book turned into a stellar film as well, and Hanks shines as one of the finest onscreen examples of yuppies in the entire world. His terrified Wall Street character embroiled in all sorts of scandals might not be a sympathetic character, but with this kind of delivery, one cannot help but feel sorry for him for getting caught up in this type of mess.

#3 - Big. The dancing piano scene is a classic celluloid moment, but the entire film does a great job of tackling the helplessness that grown-ups sometimes feel, by making the grown-up in this situation a child in an adult's body. Hanks plays the part incredibly well, and it's definitely a classic worth revisiting.

#4 - A League of Their Own. In a movie packed with strong female characters, Tom Hanks does a great job as the supposedly jerky manager who secretly might care a bit more than he lets on. This is likely the only time one will be watching satellite tv and see Madonna and Tom Hanks in the same motion picture, too.

#5 - Philadelphia. While some might think "Forrest Gump" is the Tom Hanks movie most likely to make them cry, it has nothing on this film, which gives a heartbreaking depiction of a man dying of AIDS who is intent on keeping his vocation and dignity. It caused a minor commotion when it came out ,was based on real-world problems, and showed the emotional depths to which Tom Hanks was willing to descend for a part. It might not be the number one choice for a fun Saturday night movie, but it's a great piece of cinema.
