Whether it's a major holiday or simply a long weekend visit, being able to figure out something enjoyable to watch with one's parental units can sometimes be a trying activity. After all, depending on their tastes and age, figuring out something that will be engaging but fun for the son or daughter can be a little bit tough. And watching something new, rather than going with an old favorite, is always a risk in potentially picking a dud. #2 - True Grit. A classic Western featuring great performances, it is the sort of pick that will make dads very happy and that is always fun for everyone to watch. Great child actress performances are hard to come by, but this is one of those movies that manages to really deliver. And thanks to the re-make, finding the original on satellite tv these days is pretty easy.

#3 - Top Gun. Tom Cruise was once dreamy before he was crazy, and this slightly dated yet incredibly engaging film about life in the fast lane of the friendly skies is one that is often quoted and frequently enjoyed, even though certain dialogue is a bit over the top. A great pick if it hasn't been seen in awhile, and a respectable choice in terms of soundtracks that managed to really integrate themselves into the cultural fabric; you'll definitely find yourself singing along to something.

#4 - Steel Magnolias. This is a pick for those who don't mind a good cry, and of course Dolly Parton and everyone else gives an incredible performance that is worthy of the films highly regarded status amongst those who enjoy bringing handfuls of tissues to the movies. Dramatic, touching, and definitely something that is fun to watch with family, it's really easy to see on satellite tv, too, at any given point.

#5 - Whatever Matt Damon was recently in. There are at least three Matt Damon movies on satellite tv at any given point in the day, and moms and dads both tend to enjoy his performances. So if there is nothing else to choose from, just go ahead and look for whatever he has been in lately, then put that on for the family to enjoy.
