Five Great Christmas Movies For Satellite Tv Viewers In West Virginia

When it comes to the green rolling hills of West Virginia, there's nowhere else on earth that makes sense for celebrating the holiday season. After all, gentle blanket of snow covering the hillside only makes children that more excited for the arrival of Santa Claus, while perfect stretches of space make everything from snowball fights to sledding feasible. But when the weather gets particularly rough, with high winds and plenty of snowfall, it makes more sense to bring activities indoors, where the family can curl up on the couch with a mug of hot chocolate and something great to watch on satellite tv.

For those in West Virginia who are sick of watching "A Christmas Story" or who simply cannot stand to check out "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" yet another time, here are five great Christmas movies that are just as fun, but slightly less overplayed. Great for the whole family, they're just as easy to find on satellite tv as the other more popular fare, but they are a bit more entertaining--or at least less overdone.

#1 - White Christmas. The classic with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney sometimes gets pushed to the back of people's minds, especially with all of the modern fare that's available out there. But for something that's practically a delight every single viewing, and heartwarming enough to keep the whole family engaged and entertained, there really is no better pick out there. It might be on the television a lot, but there's actually a reason for its popularity, unlike other holiday fare.

#2 - Bad Santa. This is a better pick if the family members who are going to be gathered around the HDTV are those who are old enough to drive a car and beyond. A delightfully raucous comedy with a great performance by Billy Bob Thornton and fantastic abilities by a child actor, it's the kind of Christmas film that doesn't celebrate the season in quite the same way. Definitely more avant-garde than other Christmas films with its content, and not one for the whole family to enjoy together.

#3 - How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The original Dr. Seuss animated feature, not the regrettable remake starring Jim Carrey. Even grown-ups have to admit that there's a special corner of the heart that's warmed by checking out this favorite time and time again, and in a world of overly-complicated animation designed to make everything look hyper-realistic, it's quite nice to see something that is just well-done but of a different era.

#4 - Scrooged. Certainly, everyone who has ever sat down for Christmas entertainment has enjoyed some version of "A Christmas Carol" at least once, but not everyone has giggled and then winced at the Bill Murray performance in "Scrooged," a modern-day send-up of the classic theme. He's the head of a television network, and all of the late 1980s trappings are out in full-force in a film that proves it's not that great to be greedy. Surprisingly witty, even when it gets corny, this is one of the lesser-known Christmas films worth watching if it's on satellite tv.

#5 - "Home Alone." For a pick that will keep the whole family a lot more entertained than expected, this 1980s comedy-drama that features a jovial tale of robbers being beat up by a child left home alone will do the trick. Just sweet and edgy enough, it's a great pick for the whole family before Santa arrives on the 25th.
