Five Fun Ferret Facts

1. Ferrets are illegal in some states and cities.

Technically, the Department of Agriculture of the U.S. classifies the ferret as a domesticated animal. But there are some state agencies classify them not as wild, but as "exotic" animals. And some state or city entities have banned them just because they consider the ferret to be a dangerous animal.

Even if your state seems to allow ferrets, you will still need to check with your local governmen t -- your city or township trustees. The local entities may have banned this little guy or at the very least have regulated him.

Also ask the local officials where you would go to for state information. If all else fails, browse the internet to see if you can find the laws that apply specifically to you and your geographic location.

2. The importance of spaying your female ferret

If you have a female ferret you'll definitely want to take the ferret into get spayed.

A female ferret, according to veterinarians, is an "induced ovulator" . A never-spayed female will only ovulate if she has had contact with a male.

This long-term release of estrogen can become toxic to your pet's bone marrow. When it does reach the toxic stage, it may lead to a fatal anemia.

It's a sad fact, but it has been estimated that about 90 percent of all female ferrets not spayed and not bred die during their first spring-summer period.

3. The benefits of spaying or neutering your ferret

Altering as the procedure is more commonly called has many benefits, not the least of which is the freedom from that strong, musky odor
the animal's glands produce otherwise.

Spaying and neutering reduces this body odor by decreasing the system's oil production. This, in turn, also makes your ferret's fur more silky and beautiful.

Having your pet altered usually equates to better behavior. Males who don't get neutered are usually quite aggressive. You'll want to get this procedure performed when the animal is between the ages of four to six months old. This usually stops any aggressive behavior which has developed.

4. Why it is good idea to have a collar or harness for your ferret

If your ferret should "escape", then the collar easily identifies your ferret as a pet, not just some lost animal.

Base your purchase on functionality, not fashion. Be sure to buy a collar that is lightweight, preferably one made of nylon, soft leather or suede.
If the collar is too heavy your ferret will do everything he can to try to remove it from his neck.

You will also want to get a small bell that attaches to the collar. That way you'll be able to tell where your pet is throughout the day.

If you decide to purchase a harness, make sure you buy an appropriate one. Do not try to make one from an old dog lead, because your ferret will slip out of that pretty fast.

Get a harness that is especially for a ferret. It should be a full body harness, this will help to ensure your pet's safety. Let your ferret get used to the idea of a harness before you attempt to take him out for a walk.

But, remember to only use the harness when you're walking him. Once you two are inside, then take it off of him.

5. Ferrets love to play a variety of games

Ferrets enjoy playing lots of different games. Hopping, jumping, hide-and-seek, and chasing are a few of their normal games.

They also love to dig and burrow. Your pet ferret will enjoy burrowing through the fall leaves that have fallen on the ground.

Roughhouse with your ferret on occasion, too! Just be careful, your little pet may be small, but he is definitely used to playing tough! Engage in a game of tug of war or even mock combat.
