Five Facts To Consider About Your Metabolism

By:

Whenever the topic is weight loss, metabolism always comes up. Metabolism is the process your body uses to breaking down nutrients into energy that your body can use. A faster metabolism burns more calories and a slower metabolism burns fewer calories. Here are five things to consider about your metabolism.

1 You Can Increase Your Metabolism
Your metabolism is partially controlled by genetics. You cant change the effects your genes have on your metabolism, but even the worst genes wont have much of an impact on how many calories you burn. You can still increase your metabolism and lose weight.

2 Age Doesnt Have to Change Your Metabolism
For most Americans, metabolism slows dramatically with age. However, in people who remain active throughout their lives, it only slows by one to two percent over the course of a lifetime. If you keep your activity level up to the level you maintained as a young adult, you can laugh at age.

3 Muscle is a Glutton
The easiest way to speed up your metabolism is to put on some muscle. Muscle consumes calories like a 1970s sedan consumes gasoline. For most people, an additional five to 10 pounds of additional muscle will burn 100 extra calories every day. Adding more will only increase the number of calories you burn in a day.

4 High-Intensity Exercise Helps, Too
Adding bursts of high-intensity activity to your workout is the equivalent of gunning your cars engine. Incorporate 30 seconds of high-intensity exercise into every three minutes of moderate exercise you do. This will cause an increase in your metabolism that will last anywhere from an hour to a full twenty-four hours after you stop working out.

5 Get Enough Sleep
Skipping sleep reduces your metabolism and makes it harder for you to lose weight by lowering your resting metabolism. This is the amount of energy you use when you are doing nothing. Since you burn the bulk of your calories just by being alive, a lack of sleep can make it almost impossible to lose weight.
