Five Easy Influence Tips

Five Easy Influence Tips

By:

No matter what your line of work, and no matter what kind of people you work around, almost everyone wants to be better at influencing others. Isn't that true for you?

Keeping this in mind, here are five simple strategies you can start using to become a better persuader.

1. Remember this expression forever: "People buy based on emotion and justify their decisions based on logic". In other words, logic is not the right tool for influence. Emotion is the right tool. Focus on what set of emotions you will be selling through your product, service or suggestion. Put yourself in their shoes.

2. Ask your subject, "That's not unreasonable, is it"? This is a tag question you can add to your comments or suggestions to position them for later compliance. People have a hard time saying something is unreasonable, so they usually agree that it is "not unreasonable". This is a clever and simple idea to use.

3. Apply something called a "yes set". Get your subject to say "yes" to three simple questions that are unrelated to the topic at hand. Once they say yes three times they are in a "yes" frame of mind, and more agreeable. Question examples include, "Is it already after 2pm?" or "Are you just looking at new TVs" (assuming a shopper is standing in front of new TVs at the store).

4. The word "because" can be applied to link an idea or request to a reason. The actual reason isn't even very important because people often don't pay attention to it. They hear the word "because" and simply assume that there was, in fact, a valid reason. They tend to go along more easily as a result of this.

5. Always be in rapport. You must build rapport with your subject before you try to influence them. You must maintain rapport throughout the process. If you los it, focus on rebuilding it before using any patterns of influence.

There are literally hundreds of ways to influence people but these simple tips will get you started.
