Five Classic Music Videos To Look For With Satellite Tv

By:

In a world of fancy effects and million-dollar budgets just for teasers designed to promote records, it's easy to forget that music videos used to be a completely different experience. In fact, there was even a time when MTV was devoted exclusively to showcasing videos and trying to get teenagers to vote. And while those days might be gone, the fact is that the countless channels out there devoted to uncovering the past of music are a helpful resource for some great videos, many of which look dated but some of which simply appear classic, despite the impact of time. Not sure where to begin? Here are five great music videos that should be easy to find, thanks to satellite tv.

#1 - Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box." The beginning of the arty music video, and something worth examining for those who think Gaga was the first. Seminal grunge band works with great visual artist and director and manages to create a concept that draws on the lead singer's own visual arts leanings. It's haunting, creepy, and a bit dated, but still something that stands out, all these years later.

#2 - Mariah Carey's "Always Be My Baby." It's a summer camp love story in the form of an epic music video for a great Mariah Carey song that most people have forgotten all about. Shimmery, dated, but super-fun, it's a classic take on the art form of telling a story that has nothing to do with the lyrics of the song, and it's one that is well worth checking out the next time it happens to show up on satellite tv.

#3 - Foo Fighters' "Big Me." The Foo Fighters have managed to age gracefully, but satellite tv viewers who are wondering if they always made cute and funny music videos need to check out their clip for "Big Me," all the way from the mid-1990s. Here, they do a hilarious send-up of the Mentos commercials that were so popular at the time, and it's obvious just how personable everyone from Dave Grohl to cute California drummer Taylor Hawkins have been since the very beginning. A sunny spot in the world of music television.

#4 - Blind Melon's "No Rain." From a time when even alt-rockers had plots for their music videos, this was the story of a chubby girl in a bee suit who was just looking for a way to be happy. Music video watchers will smile and frown along with her, and those feeling particularly emotional are encouraged to not watch this video if they don't feel like tearing up. Unfortunately, Blind Melon's singer was a causality of the decade of excessive drug use, so there will be no more cute bee videos in the future.

#5 - 2-Pac's "California Love." With its Mad Max theme and a high budget, this was one of the first moments that West Coast hip-hop emerged as a major presence on the screen as well as on the radio. A bombed-out dystopian thunderdome, plenty of weird costumes, and a lot of tough-looking motorcyclist were all a part of the video's motif, which was at once more rambunctious than the ridiculous opulence of the following decade and every bit as visually arresting. One well worth watching on satellite tv, no matter the year.
