Fitting A Zip Wire In A Garden

By:

Once found only in exotic locations as a means to travel and an opportunity to get an aerial view of your surroundings, zip lines are now often found in adventure parks and play grounds. However, it is possible to buy and install this thrilling ride in your garden.

Buy your zip line with safety in mind. A lot of kits are now available to buy which have everything you will need for a safe installation. These almost always also come with step by step instructions, but ask a friend or handyman to assist you if you are worried about installing it yourself. While zip wires last for a long time it is not recommended that you buy second-hand unless you are sure it is safe and know the seller well.

Riding A Zip Wire

1. If there is a harness included in your zip wire secure yourself on to this. If you will be wearing a helmet and gloves put these on now.

2. Hold on tightly to the bars attached to the line.

3. Lift your feet from the ground so that they are straight out in front of you, as if you were sitting on the ground.

4. At the end of the line, plant your feet firmly on the ground to stop yourself. Alternatively, if there is slack in the line, you can wait until you return to the middle of the zip line and carefully drop down.

Tips:

. When choosing the anchor trees ensure they are strong and mature. They should not be rotten or diseased and should be thick enough and strong enough.

. After installation or before using, you should check there is no snagging on the line.

. Be aware that things may fall out of your pockets, shoes should be sensible and long hair should be tied back.

. If the rider will be unable to reach the ground at the end of the zip line (or at the middle depending on where you will finish) then there should be someone there to help them down.

. If there is no slack in the line the ride will be faster, in this instance it is advisable to have someone and the end in case you need help stopping.

. Tie up or remove the handle bars after each use to prevent children using the zip wire, or 'flying fox', without supervision.

. Check the cable and handle bars have not become frayed or damaged before each use.
