Fitness On The Road: Plan Ahead

By:

If you'd like to do a modified version of your home workout on the road, be sure that you do the following:

  • Pack for fitness.

  • Bring workout clothes and shoes, and throw in a lightweight jacket or sweatshirt "just in case."

  • Choose clothing made of a quick-drying fabric; bring a small bottle of detergent.

  • Toss in a bathing suit, since your hotel may have a swimming pool.

  • Throw in a jump rope, for an aerobic workout you can do nearly anywhere.

  • Call ahead. Check with the hotel to find out what fitness facilities are provided, so you can plan accordingly.

  • Once at the hotel, find out where the locals workout. Call an area YMCA or store that's geared to people who do your sport, like a cycling shop or running shoe store.

  • National sports associations may be able to refer you to local clubs.

  • For example, the Road Runner's Club of America can refer you to hundreds of running clubs throughout the United States.

  • Ask your gym if they offer reciprocity with others' facilities.

  • Some health clubs, including many YMCAs, will let members of affiliated gyms workout free or for a nominal cost.

  • Consult the concierge or bell staff at your hotel for advice on where it's safe and pretty to walk or run. Ask for a map and keep it in your pocket in case you get lost.

  • Make an audio tape of your workout video and bring along a personal stereo. If you use the tape regularly, the audio cues will usually be all you need to follow along.

  • Consult the local Yellow Pages for area yoga, tai chi or martial arts studios and call to see if you can pay a "drop in" fee to take a single class or a week's worth of classes.
