Fishing Drift Boats: Can You Build Your Own?

If you love to fish on rivers with rapids, you should already know that a fishing drift boat is ideal for such conditions. However, if you have been thinking about purchasing a drift boat of your own, you may be shocked at the price of most models currently on the market. Rather than spend thousands of dollars on a drift boat, you may want to think about building your own instead.

Drift boats are based on the fairly simple wooden dory boat design, but they have been modified to withstand rough river conditions. These modifications include a wide, shallow bottom and steep sloping sides. Their ability to turn quickly is a crucial part of their suitability for rough river conditions, but the boats are also very sturdy and strong as well.

It is not impossible to build your own drift boat, even if you do not have any boat building experience. Crucial to your success will be the drift boat plans you use for the project. If you have little or not experience building boats, you will need plans that are detailed and have step by step instructions to walk you through the building process.

You may be able to find some drift boat plans for free online, although you need to make sure these plans were created by experienced boat builders and have testimonial evidence to back them up. More than likely, however, you will need to purchase your plans. Make sure that whatever plans you buy have detailed building instructions and that they have some kind of guarantee backing them up as well. You should also remember that drift boats are a type of dory boat when you are shopping for plans, since they are often placed in that category.

Building a fishing drift boat can be a challenging project, but it is a feasible project even for beginners with the right drift boat or dory boat plans in hand.
