Fires From Fireplaces Can Be Avoided If You Know How To Use Them

By:

During the winter months people try several ways to cut the costs of their heating bills. They will try turning down the thermostat and using more blankets. They might even move the family to one room and seal off the rest of the house. Most of them will try using the fireplace in the home if there is one. You will need to do several things before using your fireplace. The first thing is to have a chimney sweep come into the house to clean the chimney. They will tell you if this chimney is safe to use. They will remove all of the build up of soot from the top to the bottom.

If you want to you can even try buying old comforters as these are really warm and help keep in heat. The home-made quilts are better as they are just heavier. Wear sweat pants around the house and even wear extra clothes. If the temperature were to go up you can shed some of these extra clothes. You can even turn the thermostat down on your water heater. Most of your family would not even notice the difference unless you have a person that likes to look like a tomato or beet when coming out of the shower.

If you are going to use your fireplace to help with the use of gas in your home try to buy or cut your wood in the spring and let it set and dry. If you buy wood that has not been seasoned, in other words, let to dry out for a while, it will not burn right and sometimes not at all. If you go looking for wood to burn, even the dead wood laying on the ground might be to wet to burn. You also have to be careful of the type of wood you burn as some will burn hotter than others. Some of them you never want to burn in your fireplace like iron wood or pine. Iron wood is a type of wood that will do nothing but cause smoke damage.

Pine wood burns really hot and very fast, but this wood will put dangerous creosote or a real sticky soot on the inside of your chimney which could make sounds like a backfiring car. Some people think these sounds are romantic not knowing that it could mean that your chimney could have a fire. If this happens, this creosote will start to melt off the side of your chimney and into the fire. If enough of this sticky stuff gets into your fire, it can become a full blown fire, sending it out the top of your chimney to land on your roof setting it on fire.
