Fireplace Facts And Tips

The facial or (frontal) clearances of fireplaces are similar to wood stoves. If a fireplace hearth is level with the floor, the clearance is 16 inches. If the hearth is raised, the clearance is 18 inches, which means no combustible material of any kind can be within that facial arc .Keep in mind, furniture such as an ottoman should never be closer than 4 feet from the face of the fireplace, or anything else that might be combustible. Many times, when I am showing a home with a heatilator fireplace, people have no idea what the difference is between it and a brick or stone fireplace.

A brick or stone fireplace uses a liner of fire brick in the walls of the fireplace, but a heatilator fireplace is completely different. The fire pit consists of a steel box with four hollow arms; two up and two down. All the arms are reaching out to the face of the fireplace. As the mason is finishing the face of a heatilator fireplace, he turns the brick or stone in front of these arms on end vertically, with no mortar on the sides, just the ends, to create vents for air to flow in and out.

When you start a fire in a heatilator fireplace, cold air is drawn in from the lower two vents and hot air will eventually begin to flow from the two upper vents. Just like how your furnace operates, the cold air return on a furnace is either on the floor or base of a wall and cold air is drawn in and the hot air flows out of the furnace ducts, remember hot air rises.

Keep in mind with heatilator fireplaces with mantels, especially at Christmas time, do not place any combustible material in front of the upper two vents. Christmas stockings or a dried out garland could easily catch fire. We once placed Christmas stockings in front of a hot air vent, and the back of one stocking ended up very black. Since I was the one who hung the stockings, the burnt one became mine. A lesson extremely well learned!

When burning wood note the following. Never burn pine (soft wood) in your fireplace, the resulting amount of creosote produced by the wood will cling to the liner of your chimney. Use hardwood that has been dried for a minimum of one year. From a safety point of view, I strongly recommend that your fireplace flues be cleaned once a year by a chimney sweep company, preferably one that is WETT certified.

In my business as a Barrie Ontario Realtor, I make it point of understanding all aspects of a home's features and their mechanics so I can advise and guide my clients with confidence and knowledge. By pointing out attributes, safety concerns or issues and maintenance tips, my clients are able to make more informed choices as they shop for a house.
