Firefighters Are Heroes On Call Every Single Day

By:

Firefighters are found in every city. They are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Their purpose is to serve and protect the community. Through their willingness and ability in their profession helps protect people from fires and also provide assistance in medical emergencies. Their presence was felt during the 9/11 attacks in New York City so much that they are now regularly seen and thought of as heroes. Due to the danger and risk involved in fighting fires, those that decide to take on the responsibility have to become a firefighter inside and out.

One of the popular sayings in firefighter training is "you can't teach courage." This is true. For example, even after weeks and months of training for emergency situations, you still do not know how you are going to react when the pressure and uncertainty falls onto your shoulders. If a house is up in flames, there is no guarantee that you will come out of the situation unscathed. Keeping a level head and clear mind is extremely crucial when arriving at the scene of a situation. Making quick and precise decisions and having the natural ability to judge situations accurately can give you the confidence to save lives, but also preserve your own.

Firefighters usually start out in a volunteer type program where they are taught the basics and go through training to help prepare them for real life situations. Knowing how to plan out and execute rescue missions on the spot is a difficult skill to master taking into account the intensity of certain emergencies. It is often that when you arrive on the scene, time is of the essence. There is only a certain amount of time people have inside a burning building before they suffocate from breathing in toxic fumes or passing out from extreme heat. It is the job of a firefighter to do his best to put out the fire, save people, and attempt to save the structure. Keeping priorities straight during a call can help make a rescue procedure successful with as little injury as possible.

Firefighters in other poorer countries often times do not have the money to support their firefighters adequately resulting in numerous deaths amongst volunteers. In an effort to help raise funds, firefighter tshirts, parties, and other merchandise are sold. These firefight tshirts are usually humorous and yet go to a very serious and important cause.
