Fire Training - Functions Of The Fire Proofing System

By:

Fire proofing a building or a premises is the act of passive fire protection. It means making the surroundings more resistant to fire. Using or applying the fire resistant coating which is certified can allow the object to have a fire resistance rating. The term fire proofing does not mean that it should never get burnt, but to with stand heat to a certain limit.

Fire Equipment: Asbestos, a well known fire proofing material which is known to us earlier. It can be used for fire proofing or together with the binders as cement. It is also used in the form of pressed sheet. But later it is found that it may cause cancer on continuous usage. Nowadays the gypsum plaster has been used as s fire proofing material. This can be used along with some chemical additives.

The traffic tunnels are fire proofed because the transporting of petroleum goods in tankers will produce high temperature under tunnel which will result in explosion. So the traffic tunnels are to be fire proofed with the concrete linings. But if the concrete is wet, it can with stand the heat for a long time.

Applying or spraying of the gypsum plasters over the steel structures will help in keeping the temperature below the critical temperature during fire accidents. Once the critical temperature is reached, the steel will start to collapse. This gypsum plaster will delay the time period of attaining the critical temperature. Many endothermic materials are used as a fire proofing material till today. These materials are used even in ballistic missiles and space shuttle which travel in high speed producing high temperature on them.

The fire proofing has to meet the codes and it is necessary to get certified to be used as fire proof material. This codes vary as per the country and the climate in that particular country.

The cost of the fire proofing can be reduced by adding the polystyrene beads to the gypsum or fibrous plasters. Proprietary boards and sheets made of gypsum, calcium silicate, vermiculite, perlite, and punched sheet metal are used widely for fire proofing.
