Therefore, it is highly recommended by fire prevention experts that before using, read the instructions printed on the fire extinguisher properly. However, if possible, take a nominal training beforehand provided by local fire department.
There are following steps of using fire extinguisher:

First step break the seal and pull the safety pin fixed at the top of the extinguisher, subsequently, pin liberates a locking mechanism and will permit you to release the extinguisher.

Second step - aim for the base of the fire; this is very important to know that you have to shoot at the base of the fire rather shooting into the flame because the essential work is to remove the fuel to put out the fire.

Third step - there is extinguishing agent in the extinguisher so, squeeze the handle to release this agent.

Fourth step - This is the last step and also a technique to release extinguishing agent. While using the fire extinguisher, move it back and forth until fire extinguished completely. Initially, operate the fire extinguisher from a secure distance, and gradually move towards the fire once fire starts to diminish.

However, before using fire extinguisher, it is very essential to examine the situation i.e. intensity of the fire. Since, the fire occurs could be of various intensity, therefore it is necessary to analyzed the available oxygen and the size of fire e.g. there is no need to use fire extinguisher for a candle and again your fire extinguisher is not able to diminish the fire caught entire building. Secondly, there are following 3 major classes i.e. A, B, and C and two minor classes i.e. D and K of fire extinguisher:

Class A normally, suitable for wood, paper, and regular combustible fires. The fire extinguishing agent used for this purpose is pressurized water.

Class B it is suitable for gasoline or oil fires. The fire extinguishing agent used for this purpose is dry chemical.

Class C used for electrical fires and the fire extinguishing agent is halon or CO2

Class D generally, suitable for water reactive metals such as burning magnesium. The fire extinguishing agent is special powder.

Class K most suitable for kitchen fires and the fire extinguishing agent is wet chemical.
