When you cook it is important to watch what is cooking and watch what you are doing. If you are not being careful you can star a fire in your kitchen and cause some serious damage to the kitchen and possibly yourself as well. Cooking fires are not that uncommon and can happen more easily and more often than you think. Every year there are hundreds to thousands of cooking fires. They can be caused oil spills or splatters, laying flammable objects too close to a burner, or because an electrical cooking appliance shorts out. Cooking fires are normally caused by people being careless or putting their stoves on to high. Fires can also start in the oven.

Many people have gotten injured or even killed by cooking fires. This is why you need to watch it and take safety precautions when you begin to cook. Make sure that pot and pan handles are not sticking out because they can get knocked off and cause a fire or hurt someone. Keep little kids out of the kitchen or around a grill when you are cooking so they will not get burned. If someone is not in the room when the food is cooking a fire can start up at anytime because things can splatter on the burners, cords can get to hot, or something could malfunction.

There are many ways a fire can start so do not leave the room when you are cooking. Make sure all the towels, holders, or any fabric is away from the stove or anything that you cook with. If something is boiling turn it down this way nothing will can get on the burners or near the cords. When you are cooking with something like an electric fryer, you need to clear off the counter before you start so it is safe to cook. Did you know that if you do not thaw out poultry and you try to cook it, it can cause a fire? It can explode and shoot fire all around.

The best way to prevent a cooking fire is when you are cooking with oil or grease is to move the pan off the burner when you are removing the food. This way the oil or grease will not get on the burner and cause a fire in your kitchen. Many people have lost their homes to cooking fires and everything they owned as well. Remember, fires are dangerous and they can take your house in minutes if the fire is bad. Did you also know that oil or grease build up can cause a fire tool? The build up can still burn, so make sure you clean the stove and the oven off really good.
