Fire Damage - There Is No Specific Season For A House To Burn

By:

There is one very different thing about a house fire, they are never confined to a specific time of year. Storms and floods are usually expected in the springtime for most parts of the country. Snow and ice are most prevalent in the winter time. Hurricanes along coastal regions come during the summer and early fall. Fires can happen anytime, day or night. You might think you have taken every precaution that you can, but in the end, no one is ever really ready to face a fire in their home.

The best that you can hope for if you wake up in the night and find that there is a fire taking place is that you are alerted in time to get your family out to safety. This is the first and most natural instinct. When you have the proper number of working smoke alarms in the home, there should not be anywhere in the home that is not covered. Smoke should be able to arise from any area of the house and be detected. This is why is it so important to have smoke detectors dispersed throughout the home in several locations.

Once you are alerted, you must know what to do immediately. If it is warm weather outside, then you can get out even if your are half naked, but if the temperatures are below freezing, this can present a problem. You can not remove your family into freezing weather unprotected. Children and the elderly must be protected from the cold as well. Grab blankets straight from the bed to wrap yourselves in until you can get to another shelter. Stay low to the floor to prevent smoke inhalation if possible. Do your best to keep a cool head because it is easy for people to panic during a fire.

No matter what time of year it is when a house fire happens, you will be at a distinct disadvantage and in much more danger if the family does not know exactly what to do. This is no time to come up with escape plans, meeting places, figure out if there is anything that needs to be taken out with you such as pets or important papers. Conduct fire drills ahead of time so even the smallest family member that can walk alone will know what to do. You will be amazed at how well children can respond in a time of crisis when they have been trained what to do. Often times they can react with more calmness than the adults. Of course the fire department will probably need to be called, but do this after you have made sure everyone is out of the home.
