Finding the Best Toddler Halloween Costumes

By: Roberto Bell

If you love Halloween and are a parent, then you are probably looking forward to dressing up your little bundle of joy in a cute toddler costume. After all, what is more adorable than a cute toddler mumbling some garbled version of trick-or-treat” knocking on your door? But before you head out the door with your pint-sized Dora or a cute lobster in a pot, here are some tips to consider.
Go for comfort
If you want a happy toddler you need to choose a comfortable toddler costume. Look for something that is weather appropriate and won’t leave your toddler too hot or too cold. If your toddler is going to be wearing the Halloween costume for any period of time, look for one that allows easy access for changing (or can be removed quickly if you are potty training) to help avoid messes. Avoid any toddler costumes that have accessories which could cause choking if swallowed.
Go for safety
You also want to consider your child's safety when choosing a toddler costume. Avoid Halloween costumes that require uncomfortable masks that can hamper vision or breathing. For younger toddlers and infants, you will also only want to use minimal amounts of non-toxic face paint to avoid an allergic reaction. If your toddler is walking, look for a lighter colored Halloween costume or one that is reflective to make sure that he or she will be visible to passing cars. Also look for toddler costumes that are flame retardant, and ones that are machine washable so that you can easily clean up messes.
Go for cute
There are a couple of reasons why you should go for a cute toddler costume instead of a gory one. For starters, you will want to remember that you only have a few years where you can choose your toddler’s costume pretty soon they will be old enough to be influenced by friends and movies into picking out their own Halloween costumes. And even if you don’t consider that enough of a reason to pick out a cute toddler costume, remember that most people just don’t find a gore-soaked infant that appealing. While it might tickle your funny bone, you are probably going to get some strange looks from the neighbors.
Go for fit
While it is tempting as a parent to buy a toddler costume that is a size or two bigger in the hopes of getting multiple uses out of it you should look for a Halloween costume in your toddlers size. Costumes that are too big present a choking and a tripping hazard should your toddler trip on them remember they may not be that steady on their feet yet! And long trailing costumes can brush up against lit jack-o-lanterns and catch fire. If you are looking for a way to save money on your toddler Halloween costume, consider allowing your child to use it for dress up after Halloween, or try reselling it and using the money towards next year’s Halloween costume. You can even arrange a Halloween costume exchange with friends who have older or younger children to get more use out of your investment.
